Nothing Matters. Now What?
The Truth — Chapter 01 — Excerpt

No Script.
No Signal.

You sit in the car in the driveway after a long day, engine off, staring at the dashboard clock. Or at a clean desk, a cursor blinking on an empty screen, waiting. Nothing is on fire — your life is functional, busy, respectable — but you are still waiting, for the instructions to arrive, for some signal that the real part of your life is ready to begin.
Nothing about your life came with an assigned meaning, and nothing that happens to you is a message about what it is for. No script was written before you arrived. No signal is being sent through events.
You were not given meaning. You were given time.
Those are two different fantasies, and it is worth separating them, because a person can lose one and keep clinging to the other.
The first is the script — the belief that your life has a purpose fixed in advance: a role you were made to fill, an arc you are meant to complete. It makes people ask what they are meant to do, who they are meant to be, as though the shape of the life were settled before they arrived and the task were to grow into it. It was not settled before you arrived. Much of what gets called being lost is really the ache of a role that was never assigned.
A signal makes a different claim. The purpose was not fixed before you arrived; events are supposedly revealing it now — suffering as a lesson, relief as confirmation, a pattern with a meaning if it can only be read properly. This is the universe as a sender of messages, arranging what happens around your growth, endorsing your success, writing your life through its events.
It is not doing any of that. Events can teach you, because you can learn from consequences — that is real. It is a different thing to believe the event was arranged to deliver the lesson. We are built to search for pattern: we connect dots quickly, impose narrative, and dislike waste, especially pain that refuses to justify itself. So coincidence becomes a sign, a setback becomes redirection. But learning from what happens is not the same as being sent it, and wanting your life to mean something does not install the meaning. Desire is not evidence.
Need is not proof. It is only need.
The universe is not against you, and it is not for you either. Events are not personalised verdicts. Things happen — some beautiful, some brutal — and most arrive without an explanation attached, because there is no one attaching one. Indifference is not hostility. It only feels like hostility to someone still waiting to be addressed.
Both fantasies do the same damage, which is why they are worth naming together: each lets you wait. If the meaning is hidden, you can keep searching instead of choosing. If the events are messages, you can keep interpreting instead of building. Either way, authorship gets postponed, and it feels responsible while you postpone it — thoughtful, patient, not quite ready.
Meanwhile the machinery of your life keeps turning underneath the analysis. Attention is being claimed. Behaviour is repeating. The days are being spent whether or not you have explained them. The absence of a script does not pause any of it; it only means none of it is being guided from above.
Consequences do not wait for explanation.
That is harsher than the old story. It is also cleaner.
